Session 3 | February 02, 2009

IN-CLASS

  • Design Studio logo and business card design | Class Wall Review/Critique/Discussion of “Design Studio” designs. There was a vote and general consensus as to the design direction. A combination of Tom Wrench’s layout and Arron White’s logo. Titles were conceived.
  • KVCC Mission Statement promotion discussion [for Lesa Strausbaugh] Discussion involved ideas and concepts for crafting the message regarding enriching the lives of students. There were some good ideas, and for those of you that took the challenge and played with it — Good Job. Don’t feel you must limit yourselves to “Magnet” unless you think that would be the most effective vehicle to promote the concept.  This is a good creative challenge: You know the intended audience  and message that needs to be conveyed, now how do you deliver it in a compelling/impactful way? And how will you know if the program is working? What will success look like?
  • KVBA Discussion Regarding Posters, Second Sunday Series.
  • Visual Biographies | Personal Instructor review. Overall observation: I am very impressed with your “Graphic-making” abilities — beautiful Illustrator and Photoshop pieces. The ones that you worked through a process (Electronic Artistry, and Creative interpretations) stand out because the concepts and execution have had extra attention. Would like to see you all push your typography and layout skills to the same level in this class. Become “Visual storytellers” with the layout and type as well as the images. Make sure the type treatment supports your design in emotional content. Even before the viewer reads one word the work has given them an impression, think strongly what that initial impression should be, and does your work convey it strongly.

HOMEWORK

KVCC Mission Statement | Take your idea to a design/comp — something that we can see and you can explain. HAVE IT PRINTED BEFORE THE BEGINNING OF NEXT CLASS. Make sure to do some additional  brainstorming, research, thumbnailing, and make sure the concept for the piece(s) is strong. The idea it to impress upon KVCC employees internally the importance of the Enrichment aspect within the KVCC Mission statement. Note: the entire mission statement can be found online or it Is also posted on the wall of the CNM near the back parking lot doors.
